A Call On Osun Assembly To Settle Pensioners

Osun Assembly

It is no longer news that Osun State is due for reimbursement base on compensatory ground in the hand of Oyo State for the ceding of LAUTECH university in Ogbomoso which has given full ownership advantage to the Oyo State Government which was midwifed by the Osun State Governor, Gboyega Oyetola.

Reliable report has confirmed that Governor Seyi Makinde will be paying to Oyetola a sum of over #8 billion although in tranches. The first tranches is put at #3 billion and it is gathered that it will be paid anytime from now. I recall that the Oyinlola Olagunsoye administration when it wanted to borrow #18.3 billion sometimes during his second tenure approached the House under Adejare Bello as Speaker. In fact the counsel to borrow the money was from the then Speaker of the House acting on behalf of his colleagues. Only slightly above half of the money was eventually borrowed or accessed in principle before the expiration of that administration which the Aregbesola administration later serviced with another #25 billion loan. The kind of financial maths that will make a Man to service #18.3 billion loan with #25 billion debt beats me but that is another story completely which is for another day.

My interest is the vital role a State’s parliament can play lawfully and legitimately in the agenda setting role of a Government at the State. As Oyetola will be collecting #8 billion as “ransom” on our former Lautech inheritance, starting with the first #3 billion tranches which is imminent, what should we expect from the Timothy Owoeye led House of Assembly?

What about if the House seeks Oyetola to submit his financial desires tied to this money since it is not part of the passed budget for Osun State for the year 2021? I for instance think that the House under Speaker Owoeye could show pity for the stranded contributory pensioners of Osun State who have not earned their dues for close to 5 years. I am making a clarion call to Osun State House of Assembly members to cause an Act of Parliament which will mandate His Excellency to make pensioners piled up unpaid pension and gratuity a first line charge out of the money we are due to collect from the Oyo State Government.

If Owoeye can do this, and indeed all the Honourables, history will not forget them and should they fail characteristically to do it, history will remember them as well. Osun pensioners are going through hectic and difficult time and they deserve a breath of life by way of compassion on the Governor’s part and here comes a golden opportunity for the House of Assembly to help situation.
