The rivers state government on Friday has cleared the air on the purported reports circulating on social media that it has given a directive to shut down all primary and secondary schools in the state amidst rising cases of COVID-19.

It was rumoured earlier that the state government had ordered all schools to close in the state. But speaking on Friday, The governor, Nyesom Wike through its Commissioner of Education in the state Prof. Kanye Ebekun however debunked the report.

Prof. Kanye in a statement he signed and  made available to Newsmen described the report as fake and false, adding that the alleged statement is an handiwork of mischief-makers whose intention was to mislead the public and cause chaos in Wike-led administration and government

”The attention of Rivers Education Ministry has been drawn to a fake news trending on social media that Gov. Nyesom Wike ordered closure of schools for two weeks.”Kany  stated.

Dismissing the alleged false report, Kanye said; “The ministry, hereby, categorically states that the news is false and should be treated as false news.

He added that; “The news is the handiwork of fraudsters and mischief-makers who derive pleasure in misleading members of the public and causing confusion.“
